Killer Cane - The Deadly Hurricane of 1928

Publisher Comments:

After a murderous journey through the Caribbean and the Bahamas, a Category Four hurricane hit Palm Beach, Florida, on September 16, 1928 that left nearly 2,400 people dead in its wake. The storm decimated large swaths of land, while a 17-foot storm surge sent water roaring through the neighboring towns of Chosen, Belle Glade, and South Bay. The deadliest hurricane in Florida history, it is surpassed in the United States only by the Great Galveston hurricane of 1990.

Robert Mykle shows how the residents of the Everglades believed prematurely that they had tamed nature, and how racial attitudes at the time compounded the disaster.
